Fegan Nature Preserve
Location: Ogemaw County
Year Acquired: 2008
Size: 10 acres
Fegan Nature Preserve features a unique blend of meadows, wetlands, and wooded areas with a groomed trail and formal parking area just a few miles east of Skidway Lake. The property provides habitat to a variety of plants and animals, including deer, raccoons, foxes, rabbits, snakes, and a wide variety of bird species. It is noted for being home to the Blue Racer Snake (Coluber constrictor foxii), which is uncommon in Michigan due to habitat destruction. The wetlands enhance the water quality of nearby Cranberry Lake by filtering out pollutants before they are able to flow downstream.
In the 1930s, this land was part of a 40-acre homestead established by Bernard and Stella Fegan. This preserve was donated, in their honor, to the Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy by Bernard and Kathleen Fegan in 2008.
How to get to Fegan Nature Preserve:
The property can be reached by taking Exit 202 (Alger) from I-75 and going north on M-33 for three miles and then right on Greenwood Road for 8.4 miles to Cranberry Lake Road. The preserve parking area is on the north side of the road east of Cranberry Lake Road.
